TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT DAY CASE PROCEDURE WINS GOLD AT THE HSJ PARTNERSHIP AWARDS 2024!

Best Elective Care Recovery Initiative

Johnson & Johnson MedTech is delighted to announce that the Day Case Arthroplasty Service, in partnership with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton has been officially named the “Gold” winner of Best Elective Care Recovery Initiative at the Health Service Journey (HSJ) Partnership Awards 2024, in recognition of an outstanding dedication to improving healthcare and effective collaboration with the NHS.

The award is a recognition of the impact of the collaboration between the orthopaedic team at the Trust and the Services & Solutions team at Johnson & Johnson MedTech. Together, they took home first prize for delivering this solution that optimised hospital productivity.

Jaime Hill, Strategic Capabilities Lead, J&J MedTech UK & Ireland, said:

“We are constantly striving to deliver value in our role as industry partners to the NHS, so to see some of these partnerships be recognised by the HSJ makes me incredibly proud of the teams involved in making them a success.

"We understand the challenges our healthcare systems are facing, with limited resources, cost pressures, and waiting lists. We’re committed to continuing to partner with the NHS to offer solutions and services that optimise hospital productivity. As industry partners, these collaborations must continue now more than ever to deliver value and innovation for patients.”

The procedure has been available at both Musgrove Park and Yeovil hospitals for almost two years, where it’s performed by each hospital’s respective trauma and orthopaedic teams.

It means a patient is assessed, operated on, and discharged from hospital on the same day, back to their home environment to continue their rehabilitation and recovery.

Mr. Ben Bolland, an orthopaedic consultant surgeon from Somerset Foundation Trust who developed and led the initiative, said:

“We are pleased to have won an HSJ Partnership Award, which is a testament to the amazing work done by our colleagues and our partners at Johnson & Johnson MedTech, which has benefited so many patients so far,”

“It has been a real change, not only for our patients but also our colleagues, who have embraced the concept of early mobilisation and consistent patient education. For me, it has reignited a real sense of job satisfaction.”

Debbie Vile, the lead nurse practitioner for the service at Somerset Foundation Trust, says she’s over the moon that the hard work done by colleagues to develop the service has been recognised in this way.

“This award is a testament to the way our excellent team of surgeons, improvement colleagues, anaesthetists, therapies colleagues, and theatre colleagues have worked together – a huge thank you to everyone.”

Johnson & Johnson MedTech was shortlisted in four other categories.

  • Most effective contribution to clinical redesign: Redefining the Trauma Fragility Fracture Pathway for University Hospitals Birmingham
  • Best Elective Care Recovery Initiative: The Taunton Arthroplasty Day Case Service at Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset
  • Staffing Solution of the Year: Supporting Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust with Omnichannel and content build to support therapy recruitment campaigns.
  • Long-Term Partnership with the NHS Award: Serving as long-term partners to Guys and St Thomas’s Trust, transforming supply chain operations with a managed strategy for efficiency and operational excellence.

The team, partnering with the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust were also awarded a Bronze award for Staffing Solution of the Year.

The judging panel was made up of a diverse panel of 79 highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community. All finalists and winners were judged set against 5 clear criteria: ambition; outcome; spread; value and involvement (including details of how relevant staff, patients and partnerships worked together to realise the success).
