Diverticulitis Treatments

If you’re diagnosed with diverticulitis, your doctor will recommend a treatment that matches your symptoms.

Mild Diverticulitis

• Rest
• Antibiotics
• Liquid diet: When you start to feel better, your doctor will work with you to slowly start eating solid foods

Severe Diverticulitis

• A hospital stay
• IV antibiotics
• No food or drink: If this lasts for more than a couple of days, you’ll receive a special IV that serves as liquid food.
• Surgery: This is a common treatment option for people with diverticulitis. During these procedures, the diseased part of the colon is removed.

Complications and Surgery

Some patients can develop complications related to their diverticulitis. These can include a complete blockage of your
large intestine or a perforation (tear) in your colon. Surgery may be required to resolve these problems. At the same time,the diseased part of the colon can be removed.
