About this Device
Ethicon Plus Antibacterial Sutures are sterile, synthetic, absorbable, surgical suture that contains Triclosan, a broad spectrum antibacterial agent. Coated VICRYL Plus Sutures are recommended for closure of the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue (fat), skin and subcuticular tissue. PDS Plus Sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation, including use in pediatric cardiovascular tissue where growth is expected to occur. MONOCRYL Plus Sutures are recommended for closure of the peritoneum, subcutaneous tissue (fat), and skin / subcuticular tissue.
Economic Evidence
With a single SSI costing up to $39,000F21,22 - Plus Sutures are a cost-effective part of the WHO-recommended SSI-prevention care bundle.G22
To support SSI-related cost savings, a retrospective observational analysis was completed that evaluated over 100,000 patients who underwent colorectal surgery from 2014-2018. Incidence of SSI’s 6- months post-op with traditional sutures were around 24% for superficial SSIs.23
In the same peer-reviewed economic analysis, the use of triclosan coated sutures projected SSI-related savings were around $800-$1170 per patient.HI23
Clinical Evidence
ETHICON Plus Antibacterial Sutures were associated with a nearly 30% reduction of SSI risk in 31 RCTs with over 14,000 patients.C19,20 ETHICON Plus Antibacterial Sutures are supported by a wealth of Level 1A evidence, the highest quality in the Evidence-Based Medicine Pyramid.1-14 The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) specifically recommends Plus Sutures as part of a care bundle for reducing SSI risk.19
ETHICON Plus Antibacterial Sutures can help inhibit colonization of the suture by MRSA and MRSE for 7 days or more.DE16-18
Features & Benefits

Antimicrobial Technology
Used extensively for nearly 50 years, triclosan is an antimicrobial agent that coats our Plus Sutures as an added layer of protection.

Lasting Protection
With effective triclosan coating on each strand, our Plus Sutures inhibit bacterial colonization of the suture in vitro for 7 days or more - protecting against pathogens commonly associated with Surgical Site Infections.DE16-18

Reduces SSI Risk
Extensive clinical data shows a 28% reduction in SSI risk through the use of triclosan-coated sutures.JK3
Triclosan has in vitro activity that inhibits bacterial colonization of the suture. For illustration purposes only
Device Specifications and Comparisons
Device Specifications and Comparisons
Coated VICRYL Plus Antibacterial Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, except for ophthalmic, cardiovascular and neurological tissues.
PDS Plus Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation, including use in pediatric cardiovascular tissue where growth is expected to occur. PDS Plus Suture is not indicated in adult cardiovascular and neurological tissue. These sutures are particularly useful where the combination of an absorbable suture and extended wound support (up to 6 weeks) is desirable.
MONOCRYL Plus Antibacterial Sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, but not for use in cardiovascular or neurological tissues, microsurgery or ophthalmic surgery.
