Cindy’s Story
What was life like before joint replacement?
Life before my knee replacements was very painful at times. The pain didn’t really stop me from doing things, it just slowed me down. My knee would lockup when I simply turned over in bed. I couldn’t stand for long periods of time because the pain would become unbearable and my knee would swell.
What was the turning point for you?
I had my left knee replaced in October 2014 after trying shots and braces. Nothing helped. My doctor wanted me to wait until I was older, but I didn’t make it. I was 40 when I had my left knee replaced and 42 when I had my right knee replaced in January 2016. I know I may have to undergo another surgery when I get older, but I am not worried about it. Having my knees replaced was the best decision I ever made.
How has joint replacement changed your life?
Life now is great. No more pain, no more worries. I returned to work after each surgery at three months to a very demanding job that requires walking, standing on concrete, going up and down on a forklift and stacking freight 13 hours a day, three days a week. My knees may get stiff after working all day, but there is no more pain.
What information do you have that would help others considering joint replacement?
If you are considering having your knees replaced and your surgeon has told you it is needed, go for it. It’s a tough surgery, and recovery and physical therapy are hard, but it is so worth it. No more pain, shots or big, bulky braces. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would not think twice. Sign me up.
