Clinical and Economic Value

Economic Evidence
In total join arthroplasty, watertight multi‐layer closure with STRATAFIX™ Symmetric Knotless Tissue Control Device, STRATAFIX™ Spiral Knotless Tissue Control Device, and DERMABOND™ PRINEO™ Skin Closure System vs. conventional sutures and staples was associated with significantly24:
- Fewer reoperations within 90 daysD
- Shorter length of stayD
- Increased days to readmissionD
- Lower incidence of discharge to non-home settingE

Clinical Value
Ethicon Plus Antibacterial Sutures are the only triclosan-coated sutures commercially available worldwide— and are backed by a large body of clinical evidence.10-23 Meta-analysis of 21 RCTs showed a 28% reduction in relative risk of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) with triclosan-coated sutures versus the non-coated suture group.BC12
Understanding the Challenges with Wound Closure

Strong and Secure Tension
Interrupted closure with traditional sutures can lead to inconsistent distribution of tension.25 Strength and security can be compromised with a break in the suture during continuous closure with traditional sutures.26

Surgical Site Infections
Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) are common and costly, occurring in an estimated 2-5% of in-patient surgeries.27 A single SSI can cost up to $39,000.F28,29

Watertight Seal
An intentional breach in the skin via surgical incision needs to be closed. Bacteria, water, and other contaminants should be kept out of the incision during the critical wound healing period (48 hours).30

Complicated Patient Profiles
Today’s patients are older, sicker, have more comorbidities, are more likely to have had previous percutaneous interventions, and therefore have higher risk for complications. Vessels may be fragile and delicate, occluded, or calcified.31
