John had always been active. Having previously played first grade rugby, his current exercise routine involved swimming 1.5km every day. John began to feel pain in his hip and had trouble walking. Upon consulting a surgeon, John was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the hip — a breakdown of the cartilage between his bones. John was able to manage the pain for a while, however it continued to get worse. In consultation with his surgeon, John decided to undergo surgery and had his hip replaced at the age of 58.
